knoppix should be a good alternative to rh/mandrake. reaons follows:
- lab machines use it
- have kde, which is pretty import for newbies
- debian based: smooth upgrades (assuming you not going to pay year for rhn)
- debian based: this is what majority of CSE CS/SENG/CE students end up using anyway
- did I say debian is one of the best Linux distribution around?
